Better edited and structured than Artists with Phds by Elkins, from many of the same players (in some cases duplicated content). A lot of institutional talk that is more relevant to faculty/supervisors than the student themself, but in some ways students cannot help but tripping over these meta-level program questions when looking at the literature on artistic research. It’s helpful to know the struggles your supervisor/institution may be facing so you can negotiate your place in the machine from a stronger position. The gaps and struggles you notice in the system are also potentially job opportunities if you learn how to overcome some of the institutional difficulties and can present yourself as a node for improving these emerging systems and attract funding to do so, post program completion. Many short writeups of artistic research examples.

A Practical Guide to Arts-related
Research (2014)
ISBN: 978-94-6209-813-8
Written by an academic with experience of teaching general research skills and an academic who worked in public health before using creative methods in her public health PhD. Does an excellent job of mapping new/emerging techniques for social scientists and offers a slightly flexible style of traditional academics that artists might borrow from. Good writing about research generally, however not aimed at practice-based artists.
Artists with Phds (Second edition, 2014)
ISBN: 978-0991504756
Lightly edited handbook of underlying institutional and philosophical questions, mainly of use to program co-ordinators. Much of the content is online in essay form. The examples at the end are a starter for some, though SHARE has more, and if examples are what you seek, the journals and online communities might be better placed.
